A Cool Review for Shine in the Guardian

Shine by Candy Gourlay
'A precious and important novel that also explores exile from neighbours, family and country. The book is about reinvention and the faces we present to the world, whether it be in person, on a postcard or on the internet, all wrapped up in an exciting and perfectly paced story with a disturbing and dramatic climax.'
Philip Ardagh, The Guardian

Talking about Tall Story - a video message for The Filipino Group on Goodreads

The Filipino Group is a vibrant book group on Goodreads who talk books not only online but in regular face to face meet ups. How inspiring is that? TFG member Biena Magbitang alerted me to the fact that they're set to discuss Tall Story on Monday. Biena wrote:

We meet every month personally to discuss a book (and chat and be clingy). For August, the members voted on a poll with the theme Filipino Novels in English and Tall Story won that poll (by a landslide, if I may add!)

Here's a little hello, and a little bit of background about Tall Story. I subtitled the Filipino bits for non-Pinoy speakers!

  1. Wow, this is great. Honestly, I didn't have an idea what Tall Story is about. When you started talking about your brother-in-law, medyo naguluhan ako, haha. Like why is she talking about him? Then the mention of Yao Ming cleared the confusion.

Thanks for the video, Miss Gourlay! :)

  3. I read a good review of this book in Philippine Daily Inquirer. I'm not into basketball though I have a brother who is also my inspiration. Will grab a copy of the book.

    1. There's basketball in it, but really it's about a boy who loves his sister. I hope you enjoy it!
